A lot of tourists spend their holidays in Paleochora. It is therefore entirely set to them; there are many hotels and apartment buildings. There are enough restaurants and there cafes and dancing’s.Daily flights from Athens airport by Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines fly directly to Crete from many European airports. The island has three significant airports, the military airport Daskalogiannis at Chania, Nikos Kazantzakis at Heraklion, and a new public airport in Sitia. Paleochora is 2 hour car drive over the mountains from Chania Airport while a bus drive takes about €7 one way.
Paleochora is best to be reached by bus from Chania. The bus drives a few times a day. The trip takes about 2 hours. A taxi from Chania to Paleochora costs about 53 euro’s. On the main road on the island you drive in a westerly direction to Chania. From there you take the E65 in the direction of Kolimbari and Kissamos – Kastelli. In the village of Tavronitis you turn left towards Paleochora. It is a very twisty but good asphalt road for Greek concepts and it runs along a number of mountains.
A traveller planning to stay longer in Paleochora you might consider flying to the airport of Chania. This saves a lot of hassle with transportation from the airport Heraklion to the destination. One more way to reach Paleochora of approximately 85 km is Chania – Kolimbari – Kissamos – Topolia – Strovles – Fterolakos – Plemeniana – Paleochora or Fterolakos – Sarakina – Voutas – Paleochora. The visitor will go through luxuriant vegetation and see Topolia Gorge, and then go through a small tunel. The route goes on through the luxuriant vegetation of Katsomatados village with many chestnuts. Arriving at Strovles village, one can come to Paleochora via Plemeniana or via Sarakina or via Vouta – all three routes are beautiful, the shortest one being via Plemeniana.
Crete, jewel of the Greek archipelago and almost a country is home to some of the most mesmerizing landscapes on the entire continent. The village is a perfect base for excursions to other nearby seaside destinations. There is daily small ferry to Sougia , Sfakia, Loutro and Agia Roumeli, leaving Paleochora in the morning and returning from Sfakia in the afternoon. Thrice in a week the boats depart from Paleochora in the morning to Gavdos and return in the afternoon. Daily there are five buses which go to Chania and one which goes to Samaria Gorge.
